How does the Freedom 8 shark deterrent work?
The Freedom 8 uses SharkShield electrical field technology to create a three-dimensional protective field around the user. The field disrupts the shark’s electroreceptors (Ampullae of Lorenzini), creating an uncomfortable sensation that deters approach. The technology has been independently tested and peer-reviewed.
How long does the Freedom8 battery last?
The Freedom 8 provides 6-7 hours of continuous protection on a single charge. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for approximately 1,000 charge cycles.
What is the maximum operating depth for the Freedom8?
A: The Freedom 8 device is rated for a maximum operating depth of 50 meters (164 feet).
Is the Freedom 8 approved for the WA rebate scheme?
Not yet, however, this is actively being worked through with the relevant departments. We remain hopeful that the unit will be approved although I believe it will be after the launch.
What is the warranty?
The new Freedom 8 unit comes with a two-year warranty – double that of the previous model.
Have there been any changes or upgrades?
The underlying deterrent concept remains consistent, while the housing, reliability and overall build quality have been significantly improved.
Are parts interchangeable with other units on the market?
Any interchangeability would be coincidental and is not by design.
Australia - Will there be a service centre?
Yes, based in WA.
Australia - Are pre-orders available to secure stock?
Yes, through Coastal Agencies – please visit SOS Australia an complete the form.
Australia - Who or what is Coastal Agencies?
Coastal Agencies has operated as our brand representation company for many years and is now the Australian distributor for SANTI, AGIR, AVATAR and Sentinel Ocean Systems, the manufacturer of the Freedom 8.
What is Class M compliance and why does it matter?
Class M compliance is a new international maritime standard (European regulation ECC/DEC/(22)02) that fundamentally changes how Man Overboard (MOB) devices operate. It requires beacons to combine traditional AIS visual targeting with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) technology. This ensures your distress signal actively triggers an unignorable, audible distress alarm on nearby VHF radios and separates human distress calls from commercial marine traffic. By meeting this standard, these beacons are legally authorized to operate on designated, globally monitored emergency channels.
Can I still use an older, non-Class M compliant AIS beacon?
Older, non-compliant devices (those lacking a DSC receiver) are rapidly losing legal authorization. In many European countries, they are no longer legal to use on primary AIS Channels 1 and 2 as of January 1, 2025. Instead, non-compliant devices are being relegated to Channel 2006, which is not routinely monitored by Coast Guards or general shipping, rendering them practically useless for immediate nearby rescue.
What is an AIS MOB beacon?
An AIS Man Overboard (MOB) beacon is a personal safety device that automatically transmits your GPS position on AIS frequencies when activated. Every AIS-equipped vessel and shore station within VHF range receives your exact coordinates.
What is the difference between AIS and DSC beacons?
AIS beacons transmit on 161.975 MHz and are visible on AIS chart plotters. DSC beacons transmit on Channel 70 (156.525 MHz) and trigger automatic alarms on DSC-equipped VHF radios. Both systems identify your position — they use different communication protocols.
How do the MRB901 and HJ9018 beacons activate in an emergency?
Both beacons are designed for foolproof operation and can be activated in two ways. Automatic Activation: When secured to a compatible automatic lifejacket, the beacon will automatically trigger upon the lifejacket’s inflation when it hits the water. Manual Activation: You can manually deploy the antenna by pulling the red tab, then pressing and holding the ‘ON’ button for 2 seconds until the high-intensity strobe begins flashing.
How long will the beacon’s battery last once activated?
In an emergency, the MRB901 will operate for a minimum of 48 hours at -20°C (and longer in warmer conditions). The dual-alert HJ9018 beacon will operate for a minimum of 30 hours at -10°C. Both devices boast a long standby battery life of 7 to 10 years.
Are the MOB beacons completely waterproof?
Yes. Both the LJL901 AIS , MRB901 and HJ9018 are engineered for the harshest marine environments with an IP68 rating, ensuring absolute reliability even when fully submerged.
What is "Two-Way Acknowledgment" on the HJ9018?
Because the HJ9018 is a Class M device with a DSC receiver, it supports two-way communication. When a nearby vessel or Coast Guard receives your DSC distress alert, they can send an acknowledgment signal back to your beacon. This automatically halts the audible DSC radio alarm—preventing continuous, chaotic alarms from cluttering radio channels during the rescue—while the AIS visual target continues to broadcast your exact position.
Why should I register my product warranty?
Registering your warranty protects your investment and ensures you get the most out of your product. Benefits include faster and more efficient technical support, being the first to receive critical firmware updates or safety notices, official proof of ownership for insurance claims, and a smooth, hassle-free process should you need a repair or replacement.
Do you offer wholesale or reseller partnerships?
